On Tuesday July 9, 2024 an important meeting took place between UAPCNL, the EASA (European Union Aviation Safety Agency) and the European Commission Directorate-General responsible for aviation safety (DG MOVE).
In response to critical questions Member of the European Parliament Francisco Guerreiro, UAPCNL submitted a formal request to include UAP as a separate category in the EU's harmonized reporting systems. Although the European Commission previously claimed While UAP could be reported under the heading “unknown airborne objects,” it became painfully clear during this meeting that in practice this category does not exist at all.
The EASA and EC proposal to simply classify incidents as "Near Airborne Collision" falls short and doesn't cover the scope. Despite the urgency for international harmonization and the need for awareness campaigns in all 27 member states, concrete actions and subsidies are currently lacking. UAPCNL continues to push for a system that adequately guarantees flight safety.
