In modern aviation, a simple adage holds true: without data, nothing exists. This is doubly relevant for research into Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP). A visual observation, no matter how reliable the detector, remains anecdotal. The scientific and operational validation of UAP hinges on the integrity and correlation of technical sensor data.
Sensor data and UAP analysis requires a shift from incident-based research to a systemic, multi-sensor approach. This article analyzes the role of the primary sensors in our airspace\u2014radar, ADS-B, and FLIR\u2014and the need for data fusion to validate anomalous phenomena.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Beyond the Human Eye: The Need for Data Fusion<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The human eye, and even a single sensor, is fallible. Studies show that in approximately 27% of the analyzed UAP cases, visual detection was supported by independent radar detection. This percentage underscores the need for correlation.<\/p>

A scientifically sound case requires the interplay of various data streams, simultaneously capturing motion parameters (radar), shape (visual\/optical), and thermal signatures (infrared). Only by overlaying these layers can sensor-specific artifacts and known atmospheric phenomena be excluded.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Secondary radar systems are "cooperative"; they rely on an active transponder signal (Mode S\/C) from the aircraft. Because UAPs, by definition, do not transmit transponder signals, they are invisible to SSR and the Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) based on it. This means that a pilot receives no autonomous warning in the event of an approach conflict with UAPs.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Primary radar detects objects based on reflected radio waves ("skin paint") and is therefore essential for detecting non-cooperative targets. Case studies show that UAP are intermittently detected on PSR, sometimes recording targets accelerating from a standstill to speeds of 1,000 to 1,400 mph.<\/p>

The challenge, however, lies in the signal processing. Modern radar systems use aggressive filters to suppress airborne clutter (such as birds, weather, or balloons). There is a risk that an object with an unconventional radar cross section (RCS) or an unusual flight pattern will be filtered out as noise. For effective sensor data UAP analysis, access to the raw, unfiltered data and the associated metadata (such as filter settings) is crucial.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

ADS-B and Traffic Correlation<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) is the primary means of monitoring cooperative citizen traffic. For UAP analysis, ADS-B serves as an essential negative filter. To identify an anomaly, we must first eliminate what is "normal.".<\/p>

By correlating an observed track in real time with the ADS-B data feed, it can be immediately determined whether it is a regular flight. The American agency AARO demonstrated the value of this by identifying a suspected UAP in South Asia as a commercial aircraft after correlation. The lack of a centralized database for civil airspace data currently hampers this systematic correlation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Infrared and FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared)<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Forward-Looking Infrared (FLIR) systems offer unique insight into an object's thermal properties. This is particularly relevant for analyzing UAP's Five Observables, specifically the phenomenon of positive lift without visible means of propulsion.<\/p>

Analysis of known military FLIR footage (such as the 'GoFast' video) observed that the object was colder than its surroundings (the ocean) and did not produce conventional exhaust gases or a heat plume, pointing to an unknown propulsion mechanism.<\/p>

However, even with FLIR data, caution is advised. Sensor artifacts such as the parallax effect (which makes an object appear to move faster than it actually does) and optical effects (such as reflections or glare) must be identified and eliminated by data analysts.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Only by applying AI and machine learning to these massive, combined datasets can we distinguish the rare patterns of authentic UAP sensor data from noise and known phenomena. This is not an academic exercise, but a direct necessity for ensuring flight safety.<\/p>
